What is the difference between Search and Keywords in Cortex?

This article will provide the difference between using the Search field and Keywords within Cortex.

Using the Search field in Cortex

Program users can search Cortex applications by the following application data:

  1. First Name
  2. Last Name
  3. Medical School Name
  4. Hometown

To use the Search function in Thalamus, type one of the above data points into the search bar. This will bring up all applications that have that data point.

Example: Typing Arizona into the search bar returns a list view with any applicants who have "Arizona" in the searchable fields.

Using Keywords in Cortex

Programs have the option of using the Keyword Search within Cortex, which will search applications using custom keywords that the program created. Keyword search in Cortex uses parsing and natural language processing to review all the applications and highlight words that are important to your program.

For the steps on how to set up keywords, refer to: Creating a Keyword Search in Cortex

Cortex automatically scans the Personal Statement and MyERAS application for each keyword and provides a total number of how many times the keyword was found.

When a program has created a keyword search, you will see a keyword count in the Applications page. Clicking the View Details button in an application will open a variety of tabs to review for that applicant; clicking on the Keywords tab will provide a detailed list of the keywords found, which document they are located, and counts of individual keywords.

Please note: Typing keywords into the search field, they will not bring up applications with these keywords.
